Christian Distinctiveness

‘I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.’

(Philippians 4:13)

We aim to grow and nurture inquisitive, enthusiastic and courageous learners by using a rich, stimulating and inclusive curriculum. We do this through the lens of our Christian values:

  • Sustainability - we are a community that cares for God’s creation.
The Lord God put the man in the garden of Eden to care for it and work it. (Genesis 2:15)

  • Transformation– we are continually growing as individuals.
We all show the Lord’s glory, and we are being changed to be like him. This change in us brings more and more glory. And it comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit. (2 Corinthians 3:18 )

  • Generosity – we are generous in our love and care for each other.
Love your neighbour as you love yourself. (Mark 12:31)

  • Perseverance – we always strive to do our best.
So let us run the race that is before us and never give up. (Hebrews 12:1)

  • Stewardship – we care for our gifts and resources.
God has shown you his grace in giving you different gifts. And you are like servants who are responsible for using God’s gifts. So be good servants and use your gifts to serve each other.(1 Peter 4:10 )

Why choose St. George's Church of England school?

At St. George's primary school, everyone is welcome — whatever their faith, background, or beliefs. We’re proud to be a caring community built on Christian values like kindness, respect, and compassion, but these are values that belong to everyone.

Founded in 1826, St. George’s Church of England Primary School was established to educate all children in the local area, regardless of background or belief. From the very beginning, our school has stood as a place where every child is welcomed, valued, and given the opportunity to learn and thrive. As we celebrate 200 years of educational excellence, we are proud of our long tradition of inclusion — rooted in Christian values but open to families of all faiths and none. Throughout two centuries of change, our commitment to providing a nurturing, high-quality education for every child has remained at the heart of who we are. Today, St. George’s continues to build on this proud legacy, inspiring generations of learners to grow with confidence, curiosity, and compassion.

Our Christian foundation shapes who we are, but it doesn’t mean you have to be a Christian to belong here. We’re inclusive of all faiths and none, and we celebrate the diversity that every family brings. Children learn from one another’s experiences and grow in understanding, empathy, and respect.

Worship and reflection are an important part of school life, but they’re always inclusive and invitational. We give children space to think deeply, ask big questions, and explore what’s meaningful to them — in a supportive and open environment.

Families choose our school because they want their children to:

  • Feel valued and included, whatever their beliefs

  • Grow in confidence, curiosity, and compassion

  • Learn to respect and understand others

  • Be part of a community where kindness and care come first

In short, our Church of England ethos helps us create a school where every child feels they belong — a place where faith, friendship, and learning come together, and where all children can flourish.

Collective Worship

At St. George’s, Collective Worship is at the heart of our school community. It offers children and staff time to pause, reflect, and explore life’s big questions in a way that is open, inclusive, and rooted in our Christian values.

We gather every day for worship—sometimes as a whole school, sometimes in class. Our worships are planned with Mtr Sarah and Revd Laura and follow the Christian year, using stories, songs, and reflections that inspire curiosity, kindness, and a sense of belonging.

On Fridays, we come together for “Celebration Worship” to recognise children who have lived out our school values and achieved great things during the week.

Faith Groups in each class help to lead prayers, readings, and reflections, encouraging children to grow in confidence and take ownership of their spiritual journey.

We make space for stillness and reflection throughout the day so that every child can find calm, connect with others, and develop their own spirituality—whatever their faith or background. For children with additional needs, worship is carefully adapted to ensure everyone can take part and flourish.

Please see our Collective Worship policy for further details.

Spirituality

Spirituality encourages everyone to be reflective about the essential and inherent meaning and mystery of life. Spirituality differs from person to person and often changes within people during the own lifetime; it is those shifts throughout our life’s journey, moving us towards who we are meant to be. Therefore, putting a definition of ‘spirituality’ into words for children is difficult, as it is an experience that will be different to everyone.

Spirituality does not necessarily mean having a religion or a faith, as a person can be spiritual without having a particular faith. Perhaps the most important aspect we feel, is creating a sense of wonder and fascination in learning about ourselves, others, and the world around us.

We nurture the spiritual development of our children through every aspect of school life: our curriculum; our approach to teaching;

lunchtimes and play times; collective worship; children’s roles;

inspiring trips and experiences; opportunities to work in nature etc.

When planning for spiritual development we focus on 3 areas: Windows, Mirrors and Doors. This is woven into our Collective Worship and our themed learning.

Our Faith Group

Our Faith Team plays an important role in the spiritual life of St. George’s. Made up of pupils who are passionate about our school’s values, the team helps to lead Collective Worship in their classes on Thursdays, bringing their ideas, energy, and creativity to our reflections and prayers. They also meet regularly with Mother Sarah and Reverend Laura to discuss how worship and faith activities can be made meaningful and inclusive for everyone. The team monitors and reviews the school’s faith provision, suggesting improvements and helping to ensure that all pupils feel valued, included, and inspired by our Christian ethos. Through their work, the Faith Team helps to build a school community where spiritual growth, kindness, and understanding are at the heart of everything we do.
