Ancient Egypt and the Desert

We are looking at both History skills and Geography skills in this unit. We will also be trying to cover missed skills from our Year 3 learning.

Geographical Key Skills

 
Chronological Understanding
  • Pupils are becoming more secure in their knowledge of chronology and can place periods of history they have learnt about accurately on a timeline
  • Pupils can confidently make links between areas of history they have studied, identifying similarities and differences between them
Vocabulary
  • Pupils can generally use words and phrases to indicate time, talking about decades, centuries, millennium etc.
  • Pupils understand a few words related to history in general as well as periods of history e.g. empire, parliament, civilisation etc.
Questioning
  • Pupils can ask questions to develop their understanding
  • Pupils are beginning to challenge sources of information
Knowledge
  • Pupils remember a range of key facts and information from areas of study in Year 4 and can remember a few facts from previous areas of study
 
 
Locational Knowledge
  • Pupils can identify the position and significance of latitude, longitude, Equator, Northern Hemisphere, Southern Hemisphere, the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn, Arctic and Antarctic Circle, the Prime/ Greenwich Meridian and time zones
Place Knowledge
  • Pupils have studied a region of the U.K, a region in a European country and a region within North or South America and are beginning to identify and compare similarities and differences between the three in physical and human geography
Human and Physical Geography 
  • Pupils can describe an increased range of aspects of physical and human geography
Geographical Skills and Fieldwork
  • Pupils are confident using two of these three: maps, atlases, globes and digital/ computer mapping to locate countries and describe features studied
  • Pupils are beginning to use eight points of a compass, four figure grid references and are becoming more confident with symbols and key (including the use of Ordnance Survey Maps)

  • Pupils are more confident in using maps, atlases and globes to identify studied regions and can use one more accurately
  • Pupils can use simple compass directions with increasing accuracy
  • Pupils are recognising landmarks with increased accuracy (UK and worldwide)
  • Pupils are able to devise a simple map
 
History Year 3 Missed Statements
  • Pupils are beginning to use more specific words and phrases to indicate time, talking about decades, centuries, millennium etc.
  • Pupils are beginning to learn a few words related to history in general as well as periods of history e.g. empire, parliament, civilisation etc.
